Working on Gold Card Renewal Issues at SASSA

Earlier in 2023, beneficiaries who use cards to collect their social grants from the South African Social Security Agency (Sassa) were advised to renew their expired Gold Cards in order to continue collecting them.

Sassa Gold Cards

Approximately 800,000 Sassa Gold Cards reached their expiration date in April 2023, leaving the recipients in a state of uncertainty. The situation deteriorated further in May 2023, when more than 2.6 million Gold Cards expired. There will be 1.5 million more Sassa gold cards expiring in June 2023.

Post Office cards

Post Office cards were in high demand, and many beneficiaries were concerned they would not be able to withdraw their grants.

Some challenges faced by the South African Post Office affected beneficiaries and resulted in some cards that were due to expire at the end of June 2023 being extended until December 2023 to give the Post Office time to resolve them.

Sassa’s Communications General Manager, Paseka Letsatsi, says the agency agrees that beneficiaries of social grants should not have to travel long distances to renew their Sassa cards.

Letsatsi says beneficiaries represent the most vulnerable sector in the country, and the program is very expensive.

Payment Association of South Africa

Post Office should contact the Payment Association of South Africa (PASA) to get plenty of time to handle certain administrative issues such as finding venues that are close to beneficiaries so that they do not have to travel long distances to renew their cards, according to Sassa.

Letsatsi indicated that the Agency is working with Postbank to ensure that beneficiary issues, such as not being able to access grant payments, are resolved before they get worse.

Solution

The Postbank has introduced a new payment solution that allows grant beneficiaries to collect their grants without a Sassa card. According to the Department of Social Development, the Postbank will also continue to issue Sassa Gold Cards.
